mightylakers,

A great read from RB
The Sound of Silence
Summer Review Issue: Part 2 ...

Just a couple of points.

GSM does make use of the silences between words, although not as efficiently as CDMA, by "discontinuous transmission" where the speech coder switches to a very low data rate in the gaps between utterances. This reduces the background interference level affecting nearby cells on the same frequency.

GSM does make use of multipath signals (although not as efficiently as CDMA) through the use of an adaptive filter which is re-adapted for each received pulse using a Viterbi algorithm based on a training sequence embedded in the middle of each pulse.
