Come drive here some time and see how well it works to "pull onto the nearest land" and wait, say, when getting on or off the Beltway. You've got hundreds of cars trying to merge with thousands of cars on a 12-lane highway. The only way it works is to let other people merge in an orderly fashion. If they pull into traffic from a stand-still, traffic will grind to a halt, they've got to pull in at something like full speed. Some people like to merge in front, others in back, sometimes there's a mismatch, but usually it works fairly well, except when several people in a row doggedly refuse to let anyone in. That's rare, believe it or not. We are all in this together.

My mother can't handle the Beltway. I don't want the kids even trying it until they've been driving several years. It's not for amateurs.
