i don't think so. there are only a handful of mutual funds who are allowed to go short, and those are dwarfs in the mufu universe. they certainly don't account for the growth in loans to brokers.

of course there ARE institutions that are shorting the market...but aside from the huge commercials short position in the spoos, if you look at the size of direct short positions vs. the share float, this is really just a minuscule amount.
