No, I have never fired a big Fifty. I'm told it's about like a stout 12 gauge, and the one time I fired full-house slug from an 870 short barrel was once too many. Way worse recoil than a .30-06 in an ordinary-weight gun.
The Fifties come all ways - semi-auto, magazine-fed bolt, single-shot bolt, single-shot "other" (rotating breech plug like the Mountain Eagle comes to mind). Maadi-Griffin even had a "kit" for a single-shot 50BMG pistol.
Now THAT I would try on a bet. I have a fifty-caliber wheelgun (youch) and a 45-70 single-shot pistol. 400 grainers at over 1600 fps, chronographed. THAT'll wake up the neighbors.

Re the 25-06: Yes, that did start as a wildcat. Please forgive me; I get picky sometimes. Technically my .500 Linebaugh isn't a wildcat anymore either - since commercially loaded ammo is available.
