Re: 10/11/00 - [IMDC] Bloomberg: Inamed Suing Mystery Web Users Who Allegedly Posted False Notes

New York, Oct. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Inamed Corp., a maker of breast implants and other medical devices, is suing three unnamed people whom it claims have defamed the company by posting false statements on Internet message boards.

Inamed said in the lawsuit it thinks computer users identifying themselves as ``beggarbuggar,'' ``zydoc'' and ``iplus!'' are either disgruntled Inamed employees, work for a competitor or are short-selling Inamed stock. The suit was filed today in New York State Supreme Court in Manhattan.

The Santa Barbara, California-based company said the three used Yahoo! Inc. message boards to allege undisclosed costs and liabilities associated with the company's recent acquisition of Collagen Aesthetics Inc. Some of the messages promote an Inamed competitor, Mentor Corp., the company claims.

``The apparent motive behind publishing such false and misleading information is to negatively impact Inamed's businesses and operations and/or its stock price,'' Inamed said in the suit.

The company asked the court to help it identify the defendants. Inamed seeks damages and a court order forcing the mystery message posters to end their activities, claiming libel and fraud.
