Jim, There's some truth about the employee part here, Pat Russo's downfall came about from the fact that after Fiorina left her holding the sales force Baby, a huge chunk of the ex-Ascend sales force evaporated after it became clear there would be no culture change. The old mentality Lucent clique was to continue as opposed to the rapid reaction mindset required to compete in the internet world. That coupled with the M&A people wasting money on acquisitions of vaporware companies or compounding product overlaps caused a R&D braindrain to the point where Lucent were firing out cease and desist letters to startups right left and center. LU took on too much, too soon, and didn't dispose of the useless trash (Avaya) fast enough. So much creativity has been lost :-(
