No worries, I wasn't offended, I meant the "lol" literally. (Let's just say I spend a lot of time in fields where doubletalk is the mothertongue.)

Agree w/the rest of your post. Before I started focusing on tech in fall '98, my biggest wins came from shorting financials, often over balance sheet issues.

I do think you are letting Old Economy types off too easily. To pick an egregious, but by no means isolated, example, GM's "earnings" in the late 1980s relied heavily on financial gymnastics like assuming their pensioners would die off early. (I always wondered if they started handing out free cigarettes at the plants...)
