My guess is that they realize that thousands of investors are getting their arses kicked because of all this climate of uncertainty. They are acting responsibly at this time, IMO, by sustaining their stock price by assuring the investment community that all is well. At the same time it helps avoid investors from being wiped out.

In my opinion, Lucent's problems are due to Nortel's gains. Despite this likelihood, many Nortel investors are being squeezed out of their investment for several reasons, including margin calls. I for one wish that Nortel would do same as GLW and preannounce so as to stabilize the stock and spare us the losses.
