Hi Jim,

I think it's important to separate IP networks that take up to twelve or more hops (the public Internet, for example), and those which are purpose built, and only have one or two hops. The latencies you speak of are characteristic of the former, while high-quality IP transport can be achieved with the latter. I don't know what 360 has in mind, but if they design their backbone like LVLT has designed their IP intranet (for lack of a better term) that they intend using for voice, then I don't think that latencies will be an issue. My mentioning LVLT serves another purposes here. You might recall that when LVLT first made their intentions known, they, too, stated that they would be all IP.

The first large scale node equipment LVLT purchased, however, was ATM based. Next, they purchased a legacy CLEC [DLEC?} using Class 5 switches in order to assist them in the "transition" process to IP. Now they are primarily IP based, although I'm quite certain that some of their ATM and SONET gear is still up and working.
