I don't see the situation as likely; I don't think the Chinese are going to invade Taiwan. I do think that every step the Chinese take toward integrating their economy with others and building external trade links makes a confrontation less likely.

The Chinese do have a xenophobic streak. If you look, say, at the Newsmax coverage of US-China relations, you'll see that they're not the only ones.
