Hi John, Back to the FTTH discussion, which is also a discussion on how the various service providers are trying to encroach on other strongholds. The ILECs have the last mile covered with twisted pair and DSL was introduced to increase the bandwidth to the home. They are partnering with the big pipe providers like Qwest to circumvent the long distance charges. The LD carriers are either partnering with or acquiring cable companies to get the last mile connectivity. You will notice that the LD/Cable partnership not only brings high speed data and voice to the home while avoiding the local exchange, the customer also gets the good ole television hookup. So, until the ILECs have an infrastructure that supports the ole connection the the boob tube, they are going to have to partner with someone to keep up with the LD/cable operators. To wit, Pacbell now has a program in So Cal where if you go with their service, they will hook you up with all of the DirectTV gear for free....including installation. Can't wait to see what the power companies are going to offer....(don't forget, they have the right of ways to the home too).
