<<I think it says we as a nation will not tolerate criminal behavior based on bigotry>>

Hey flathead We won't tolerate criminal behavior regardless!!!...now if only you can get your liberal friends in Washington and the ACLU to back off so we can put some sting into the consequences.

<Demanding stiff penalties for hate crimes creates ever more ways to separate?

I think it says we as a nation will not tolerate criminal behavior based on bigotry...a unifying theme.>

Ok, well I guess we are not going to agree on this one.

I would much prefer: "We as a nation will not tolerate criminal behavior." Period

Constantly calling attention to differences is what separates. Why is that such a difficult concept to entertain? Plus, as I see it, all crime involves some sort of bigotry. It just seems to me that many in this country are caught in a constant battle of one-upmanship to the point of ridiculousness. They won't be satisfied until we
are all guilt ridden over every choice we make.

Hate crime laws are stupid. If it's a crime, it's a crime regardless of the race or sexual preference of the victim.
