Thanks for that reply. The "run on the banks" scenario would be a major economic catastrophe, I agree. I will think some more about that.

Perhaps. A better strategy would be to buy actual 3 month T-bills...or wire transfer to an FDIC-insured institution...

Grace, back in 97 I had my XBroker move my mutual fund cash from a MM to a Treasury Backed MM. He thought I was crazy and I have thought I was for about 3 years now. :-)

Grace, good point. The main concern is credit quality. The non bank lenders tap into the money markets to make foolish loans to foolish people to do foolish things -g- It is not unreasonable to expect some money market funds to suffer losses when the economy tanks. I suppose T- bills are the safest dollar denominated paper. mike
