Two short ideas: nextel partners (nxtp) has $5 billion market cap and no revenues and expects 1 million customers by 2004. That's putting a high discounted value on those subs. Lsata is a shell corp. that may at one time house john Malone's satellite assets. Right now it is sitting on 5 million shares of pcs hedged at $60, on which it is required to pay an 11% dividend to lmg, in cash or stock. Sort of like a bottomless convertible. The other satellite assets are marginal (a 10% interest in alot of development stage projects), and a $400+ million market cap.

Conseco Capital Chief of Equity Investments Unexpectedly Quits

Carmel, Indiana, Oct. 13 (Bloomberg) -- Conseco Capital Management Inc. said chief equity investment officer Thomas Pence unexpectedly resigned.

The $35 billion money management arm of Conseco Inc., the Carmel, Indiana-based insurance company, said portfolio managers Erik Voss and Paul Berg will assume his duties.

Pence joined Conseco in 1991 and was the firm's ``lead equity spokesman'' who ``recently enjoyed considerable media attention,'' the company said in statement distributed by Business Wire. Spokesman Craig Andrews was not immediately available for comment.

Conseco shares are down 73 percent in the past year, in part because of investor concern about the company's $2 billion of debt and declining earnings.

Given the well-publicized slowdown in domestic automakers, is VC going nowhere fast? Or does His eminence still have confidence that it is priced low enough that it will eventually shine? Nice action in AGX today, way to go.
