Murali, Disagree away. I don't care, and think that, coming from a lesser advance country, you are naive, and are awed by academia.

I don't recall ever saying anything to you about Galileo. Besides, I thought is was Copernicus that came up with the theory that the universe did not revolve around the Earth. Which ever one of them came up with the concept, they were ridiculed by those that were academics. They were angry that anyone would dare differ with their teachings. That jealousy has not changed in all of the centuries. Academics are set in their ways, and prefer to maintain the status quo than to go out and look for new truths. When Columbus said he believed that the world was round, and not flat, it was the academics that ridiculed him. It appears to me, that you have been brainwashed by the faculty of Dayton University, which I have not seen on any list of academic giants. ~H~

Actually, Galileo was a lifelong professor at the University of Pisa. He was condemned and imprisoned by the Vatican for his progressive views.
But universities today are in the process of dissolution (IMO). Few first rate scientists are willing to have their ideas stolen from them by the universities, and more and more are going into business for themselves. The entire biotech business was founded by runaways form the universities.
Education at the "best" schools is horribly expensive and is largely a hoax. Literature and humanities are in the grips of truly weird post-modernists. At least that leads to chucking the classics which are totally useless, but it is quite insane. Deranged feminism and queer theory sweep the boards. These people are not liberals or socialists -- they are certifiably insane. Business, science, and engineering need to break away from these lunatics and hire a few technicians who can teach young people to write. Sort of a shame to leave the huge endowments to the fruitcakes, but that's what's happening.
Most non-elite universities are hopelessly ignorant -- both the students and much of the faculty. There are some good graduate schools at some of the major flagship state universities, but there are far too few students who are prepared to enter doctoral or professional work.
At most good universities in the US a large proportion of the best graduate students are from China and India. Were it not for racial and national discrimination, IMO, there would be very few white youths entering university teaching.
