U.S. Says Five Killed in
Warship Attack

Oct 12 3:33pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) -
Defense Secretary William
Cohen said on Thursday at
least five sailors died in the
attack on a U.S. warship in
Yemen, which he said
appeared to be an ``act of
terrorists'' but that the
cause was still not known.

``If, as it appears, it was the act of terrorists then
we will do everything in our power to track them
down and hold them accountable,'' Cohen told
reporters.

Cohen said according to an eye witness
account, an explosion occurred on Thursday
when a small boat that was participating in the
mooring in the Yemeni port of Aden approached
the USS Cole. ``I want to repeat that we do not
know the cause (of the attack),'' Cohen said.

He said the death toll was five and that 12
sailors were still missing and 36 injured, adding
that these numbers were likely to change as the
situation became clearer. ``This is a sad day for
America, for the Navy and for the families of the
lost and wounded sailors,'' Cohen said.

Navy Chief of Staff Adm. Vern Clark showed
pictures of the damaged vessel, which has a
huge gash in its left side. ``What I know about the
ship and the events that have been described to
me, I have no reason to think that this was
anything but a senseless act of terrorism,'' said
Clark.
