I don't think that it will go so far as to get to full engagement by the U.S. Military. See my earlier message.

I do believe the mid-east tensions are specifically happening to influence our elections (theory borrowed heavily from "Smoothsail"). Current tensions cause oil prices to go up and are hurting our pocket books in many ways. This looks bad for the democrats ("it's the economy stupid" may haunt the democrats yet)...and thus Gore and Lieberman. If this escalates to full U.S. military engagement, they could get a reaction that is opposite of the desired effect.

As was suggested to me in PM, many in the mid-east may not want a Jewish vice president. If the U.S. were to go to war, that would be an opportunity to rally the nationalistic pride around the current administration, this is the part where the opposite effect is accomplished.
