"judges often use intent (i.e. state of mind) in determining the severity of sentence"

Yes, but this is the first time, that I am aware of, that people are getting charged with crimes for "thinking bad thoughts."

Keep in mind that there is no federal criminal penalty for murder in general. If this law is enacted, there will be a criminal penalty for commmitting murder AND THINKING BAD THOUGHTS, but not for merely committing murder.

So, Hate Crime Law = Thought Police.

Anyone has the right to hate me because of my ancestry, because of the way I look, because of the way I talk, or for no reason whatsoever. It is not my business, or any other person's business, why (or if) someone chooses to hate me.

I find it ironic that the ACLU supports the right of the KKK to march through Skokie (Freedom of Speech) but that they are not supporting the right of members of the KKK to hate various persons (Freedom of Thought).

Another thing that bother me about Hate Crime laws is that they will not be enforced fairly. I have been the victim of "Hate Crimes" perpetrated by blacks on several occasions (i.e., selecting me as a victim because I am white), but I have never been the victim of a hate crime perpetrated by an anglo (i.e., selecting me as a victim because I am hispanic).

I think that the Hate Crime law is, in itself, a racially and gender-motivated attack on heterosexual, non-disabled white males.
