NW: The one thing that is very similar, and probably doesn;t change much from year to year is the sense of events spinning out of control. Nothing like a good Middle East crisis to bring that feeling on. I was in the old Soviet Union in the summer of 1967 during the Six Day War, and I have never felt such an atmosphere of gloom. The Soviets were not happy about what happened, to put it mildly, and they had no idea how to deal with it; as far as they were concerned, it was all somehow the fault of the AMericans. So in essence they had no policy, no exit strategy, and no plan for moving forward. You could feel the chaos in Moscow that summer. M2
