DoubleClick 3rd-Qtr Loss Widens as Expenses More Than Double

New York, Oct 12 (Bloomberg) -- DoubleClick Inc., the largest online advertising company, said its third-quarter loss widened because expenses more than doubled, although it reported a profit when excluding merger costs.

The loss widened to $10.7 million, or 9 cents a share, from $136,000, or breakeven, in the year-ago quarter. Revenue rose 79 percent to $135.2 million from $75.3 million.

Excluding amortization and non-cash charges, DoubleClick earned $3.74 million, or 3 cents a share, from $1.23 million, or 1- cent, in the year-ago period. That matched the 3-cent average loss expected by analysts polled by First Call/Thomson Financial.

Operating expenses climbed to $53.1 million from $27.5 million. DoubleClick shares have plunged 86 percent this year as analysts have seen slower growth in Internet ad revenue.

The New York-based company's shares fell 63 cents to 17.50 on electronic networks and regional exchanges after the close of regular trading on the Nasdaq Stock Market, where the shares fell 3.06 to 18.13.

New guy here. Been burned by the dot coms, so now want to learn the in's and out's of shorting. Any good places to get info (other than Dear Anthony, obviously)?

Not a big time player like some here, so most pay sites are probably out of my league...

Any help much appreciated.
