>>>What I meant is that if you look at these laws from the perspective of a white male, the laws tend to imply that they are dangerous people who must be kept under control or they will run amuck burning crosses on people's lawns (if white males are not such a danger, then why do we need the hate crime law to begin with?).<<<

don--

I know more than a few white, straight, non-disabled, etc. males who are sickened by the Byrd and Shepard (sp. ?) deaths. They are mature adults. They know any hate crimes bill is not targeted at "them." They know persons of any backgroud could be a bigoted criminal perpetrator of hate crimes.

Perhaps the people your referring to are not mature adults. If so, I am not concerned about their "feelings."

>>>I am bothered by the fact that the laws punish people for their thoughts and attitudes.<<<

This is fast becoming a ridiculous claim. Actions and actions only trigger consequences under Hate Crimes laws. The thought police are not out administering lie-detector tests. Get real.

<<I think that these hate crime laws and affirmative action only serve to widen the divide.

The only way you can eliminate prejudice is for people to know each other on a personal level. If you set people at odds through laws or policies that distinguish between blacks, hispanics, women, gays, etc., all it does is perpetuate an "us vs. them" mentality.>>

A Republican couldn't say it any better....congrats!!
