Conspiracy Theory at its most extreme, I admit... But you have to admit the logic is compelling...

That thought crossed my mind as well. I obviously have no idea what angles are being played. But I would be very surprised to see any effectively coordinated action by Arab States aimed at pressing the US to press Israel to lay off. I would be even more surprised to see direct military action against Israel. Saddam might find it advantageous to try and make a gesture, which would make life temporarily embarrassing for the Arab states allied against him, but his capacities are limited.

It is a very iunsecure part of the world, but I don't see it as a situation that calls for major force deployment on the part of the US.

It would not surprise me at all if flies on the wall at US-Saudi meetings heard both sides wishing fervently that both Israelis and Palestinians could be conveniently bound and gagged for all eternity.
