Joe, Re: AMD announcement of 1.2/0.8 on Intel Earnings

Nice timing! I just hope the chipset & MB suppliers are ready for the volume!

And AMD doesn't suffer from shortages. I have been wondering for a while that if Dresden is doing so well and had some months before full start-up if AMD might have accumulated some inventory. I know that inventory has been questioned by others here (and of AMD in the CC)... but I always hoped that AMD was accumulating inventory of the highest speeds rather than constant steep downbinning.

Many of us have often looked forward to the days when AMD would have much higher ASP (the dream of INTC @ $190) but it seems AMD has a much more modest target and/or is willing to accept lower profits now to maximize the long-term position to be earned by expanding market share. And with the entrance of competition (AMD, Via, and Transmeta) the MPU market will rapidly become a far better market for the consumer with respect to price and choices -- I just hope there remains sufficient focus on and invest in providing quality solutions.

Yesterday (or earlier today) I decided it was probably time to just buy a machine - a nice MB & Duron for future upgrade. Those plans changed today and I will likely seek a 1.0 Ghz T-Bird.

ps: I wonder how long it will take the street and press to notice AMD's aggressive plan to sell 7.2M Athlons in 4Q00.
