Broadview is deploying the Nortel Universal Edge intelligent multiservice access system (IMAS) in its integrated voice and data network under an extension to an existing contract with Nortel for advanced switching and access systems. Nortel's Universal Edge IMAS, the first carrier-class broadband access solution to combine support for multiple DSL transmission types with asynchronous transfer mode (ATM) switching, is part of the Nortel strategy to enable the local Internet. Universal Edge IMAS delivers scalability, port density and a redundant architecture for reliability. "The carrier-class Universal Edge IMAS provides the redundancy and operational reliability that our state-of-the-art network requires," said Kenneth A. Shulman, chief technology officer of Broadview, which serves customers in the Northeast and is based in New York, N.Y. "Its architecture incorporates a true ATM switch, not just multiplexing and concentration." "This allows us to integrate multiple traffic types, assure quality of service (QoS) and efficiently utilize transport capacity," Mr. Shulman said. "In addition, Universal Edge IMAS is highly scalable, making it easy to cost-effectively increase network and port capacity to broaden our customer's communications capabilities." Broadview also uses Nortel's DMS 500 multiservice switching systems, AccessNode and Universal Edge 9000 DSL-grade high-speed service access platforms to support its high-capacity digital network construction program. "We are delighted to expand our relationship with Broadview Networks," said Roger Dorf, vice-president and general manager, broadband access, Nortel Networks. "Broadview Networks is committed to providing its customers with advanced communications services and applications. We are helping to fulfill that goal with solutions that can deliver the industry's fastest and most reliable high-performance Internet services. "The multiservice architecture and high port density of our Universal Edge IMAS are designed to provide DSL services with superior quality at a lower cost than alternative products," Mr. Dorf said. Designed primarily for service providers that wish to offer business-quality DSL services, the Universal Edge IMAS delivers full ATM switching, traffic management and QoS. These features enable service providers to deliver multiple services -- including voice, video and data -- to their customers over a single DSL line. With the extensive QoS capabilities of Nortel's Universal Edge IMAS, commercial customers can receive service levels previously available only from T1/E1, frame relay and ISDN, but at lower cost. Nortel's Universal Edge IMAS supports a range of DSL technologies -- including ADSL, G.Lite, IDSL and SDSL -- on a single, flexible access platform so that service providers can minimize technology risk. Service providers can deploy mature services such as ADSL today and migrate to optimized services such as G.Lite as the need arises. Broadview is a network-based electronically integrated communications provider of data, Internet and voice services to small- and medium-sized businesses and communications-intensive residential customers in the Northeast United States.
