It's easier to get some idea of the mass market potential of digital cameras. Quality is increasing, and costs are shrinking. Somewhere between 2 and 4 Megapixels is probably good enough for mass consumption, and a price of maybe $100 or so. So we are already there with MP quality and about 1/4 of the way there with price. They will also need to be made easier to use. Downloading is still complex and things like automatic white balance often don't work too well. None of these changes require any great discontinuity on the part of either the consumer or present digital camera and storage makers, so IMHO it's a matter of time. These are things that will be solved by the "normal" advance of technology. .Film will be around a long time and the transition will probably be gradual. But it wouldn't take a very big percent of the present film market for to add up to a lot of money for digital.
E books are much earlier in the tech cycle, requiring discontinuity on existing producers , but little on the user end. This is classic gg material, but the game has just begun, so it's risky. I believe that e books will have to bypass most of the present mass marketers. Late, if and when e books start to take market share the retailers will wake up, just like they woke up to the WWW. I have no direct knowledge of the book publishing business, so all these ruminations may be of limited value. I own GMST, but it's a small position.
