I guess our engagement resulted in India and Pakistan obtaining nuclear technology It was lack of engagement policy with two countries. Plus republican leadership flooded Pakistan and Afghanistan with arms (free of cost, if I may add) and turned a blind eye to both countries developments of nuclear tech. Now you are seeing Laden using the same arms and training against US. Technology always results in reduction of cost of weapon systems over a period of time. Now only if pentagon were to spend the money wisely instead of scrapping good systems just before deployment...
