Adaptive Broadband Signs $51 Million Contract With airBand Communications, a Wireless Local Access Provider

BusinessWire, Wednesday, October 18, 2000 at 08:32

SUNNYVALE, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Oct. 18, 2000--Adaptive Broadband(TM) Corporation (Nasdaq National Market: (ADAP) announced today it has signed a three-year, $51 million contract with airBand Communications, Dallas, Texas, for AB-Access(TM) fixed wireless broadband equipment. airBand launched its wireless broadband access services in June of this year and has been providing up to 10 Mbps service to customers in Dallas, using the AB-Access equipment. The company plans to roll out service in the Dallas-Fort Worth region and develop local wireless high-speed networks in key metropolitan areas nationwide.
Leading Venture Firms of Battery, Crescendo and Sevin Rosen Backing airBand

Battery Ventures led the first round of financing which provided airBand with $45MM in financing, and was joined equally by Crescendo and Sevin Rosen, the two venture capital firms that originally incubated airBand in March of this year. Between the three venture firms, they have backed some of the communications industry's most successful and progressive emerging companies, including Akamai, CIENA, and Digital Island.

AirBand is Focused on Filling the Broadband Access Void

Andrew Lombard, airBand CEO, observed a need for an alternative to ISDN, private line, cable modem and DSL technologies to offer small and medium-sized businesses ultra-fast, reliable, affordable access to the Internet. According to Lombard, "The traditional services fall far short of addressing all customer needs, either because of price, limited availability or speed limitations. With DSL alone, 40 to 60 percent of customers wanting broadband access either can't physically get it, or can't get the service at their desired speeds. We're talking about providing the fastest performance available and having you up within days." airBand's wireless broadband service is available in a selection of service packages, the fastest of which offers 10 Mbps access--at least 10 times the speed of a high-end DSL line.

Additionally, Adaptive Broadband recently announced an LMDS (Local Multipoint Distribution Service) version of AB-Access. Currently being deployed at the ultra-high speed of 25 Mbps, both transmitting and receiving, product capacity is planned to increase in 2001, as requested by customers. Currently positioned as a fixed offering, portable versions of AB-Access are planned to coincide with the expanded roll-outs of wireless broadband services in 2001.
