Let me explain why I think Audrey will be a winner.

First, as several of you have pointed out, the half of the population that still does not own a PC are not at all like the half that does. There was a WSJ article a few weeks ago that showed that most of them don't want a PC. To attract these users, the product has to be radically simple: instant on, totally intuitive, immediately useful, and rock-solid reliable. We have all seen this battle fought out between Palm and Microsoft on the handheld, and, so far, simple and reliable has won. Now the battle moves to the counter top.

But I think 3COM has much more than a stand-alone product in mind. They have the largest share of the cable and dsl modem market, they are a founding member of the bluetooth coalition, and they have signed up with Extended Systems to link bluetooth devices to Windows. Clearly, if 3COM is going to become the leading wireless network vendor in the home, they have to control some territory. Microsoft controls the home office; Sony, the entertainment center; and Palm, the spaces in-between. That leaves the kitchen counter top. Women are the organizers of most families, and the kitchen counter top is their turf. They will be the great next wave of Palm users, and 3COM, with their Palm compatible products, will have a big advantage over Microsoft and Compaq.

Finally, check out Palm's anyday web based calendar system. It is a great example of what our family calendars will look like in a couple of years.

I have held COMS for just over a year, and I have never felt more optimistic about their direction.
