That's an interesting question. The talk about moving the Cobalt stuff to SPARC suggests to me Sun still isn't too keen on X86, so I suspect it's more "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" type stuff. I think they're still a little perturbed about the (unwarranted, IMHO) bad press Intel has been spewing (e.g. claims that Sun wasn't pulling their weight on IA-64 and that infamous speech a few weeks ago).

If they WERE going to link up with AMD somehow, I'm not sure they'd be going public with it until it was a done deal, so I could be totally wrong -- it happens! One thing I really like about Sun management is their ability to keep their mouths shut when appropriate.

But that's JMHO.
