AMD is performing very well and an argument can certainly be made that they are taking market share away and gaining prestige from Intel. But an argument can also be made that they are going after new markets in the same old commodity market sort of way.

Institutions buying after a period of market disruption often tend to swarm to the blue chips of the growth sectors. AMD is still regarded as the bastard son compared to Intel. If the fate of the stock price were left to individual investors, then AMD would probably be leading the rally. Institutions are still mostly avoiding or dumping the stock. The perception that AMD is on shaky ground is not going to be undone in quick order.

AMD will be a great buy when the institutions finish dumping it.
