Of course I probably think too linearly for the way things really work- but I am a creature for whom time has meaning, so I don't think I am built to think in a non-linear fashion.

But the universe probably isn't a bit like us. SO although the way I imagine causal chains is rolling forward, in reality they could be rolling forward and back through time- I've NO way to know. So my sense of determinism I think is more fluid than the one you were setting forth for discussion. I don't think things can be otherwise than how they are- but I don't think how things are determined to be the way they are will ever be knowable for us- so although there are causes, I've no idea what all the causes are or where they come from, so it's as if things were undetermined.
