While I'm sure short covering potentiated the rally this was more the short covering of erstwhile bulls who thought they could pick up a few dollars based on a market decline. Experienced Short Traders seldom will cover on adverse price action unless there is a high probability of re-initiating the position at higher prices. Since this opportunity does not usually present itself during squeeze situations (since the adverse price movement is by definition transitory) I know many traders are carrying short positions into the next few weeks. I am, and I am much less concerned than if I was carrying paper.
