Sector- I had already read over the article before my posting. Maybe I am missing something about reliability? I felt the article spelled out exactly how difficult reliability is with fiberless solutions. For example:

"...we do not operate in a "user-friendly" environment, compared with the sheltered existence of an optical fiber. Unlike fiber-optics we have to contend with beam divergence, scintillations, massive background light, weather and so on. Additionally...."

"You can't argue with the weather. Clouds can reduce the range of an optical wireless system by a factor of 30."

"The simple realization is that free-space optical communication by itself has a limited telecom application due to the inherent weather transmission limitations..."

"Take a look at TeraBeam's Web site- most of the jobs being advertised are for meteorologists. Doesn't that tell you something?"

I know what Medved said(in the article) about solving the reliability problem, but he didn't really say how much this effects the distance(in terms of absolute distances) limitations. So I'm wondering how much the overall market stats for the potential fiberless last mile solution is reduced when distance is taken into account? Thanks. -MikeM(From Florida)
