In my somewhat knowledgeable opinion, Microsoft did get it right with Windows 2000. But just like every OS vendor that has finally knuckled down to build something reliable, it took years longer than they expected. And even after all of that it won't run a large number of the Win9X applications.

Now the quality bar is at a level where they can't just pump out garbage updates, so it's going to take them another 2 years to add the app compatibility piece. By that time, it might be irrelevant what the OS is to most people, since you'll be able to do most of your consumer computing using a device that runs a browser and nothing else.

Tom's right too - $10,000 bucks is a rip-off. A motivated individual, a subscription to MSDN, and a lot of free time to find out what doesn't work will make you an expert.
