The company, which has an assembly unit near Delhi, sells television sets and audio systems that contribute close to 80 percent of annual sales worth $132 million (6.13 billion rupees). The rest comes from audio cassettes and computer monitors. Having just two product categories is a bit risky. That's why we want to bring in computer notebooks, PlayStations and mobile phones," said Teruo Ishii, managing director of Sony's Indian subsidiary. Sony India needs to widen its product range if it wants to catch up with rival Korean consumer electronics makers like LG Electronics and Samsung Electronics that have invested heavily in marketing over the past two years to become two of the top five sellers in the world's second-most populous nation. "We acknowledge the competition from the Koreans, and we will go for more campaigns on television," Ishii said. Sony, the world's No. 1 maker of video game consoles, is hoping it can extend its success with the PlayStation. As for notebooks, it will face competition from the likes of Compaq Computer and Dell Computer, which have said they plan to make such products in India. [The Indian people are very price-sensitive. K6-2+ VAIO will sell well there w/ Sony name.] "This is a huge market, and there is always space for everyone," Ishii said.
