Some big differences between 3com and MRVC IMO.....

3COM was beset by a longstanding failure to execute and with management which the Street rightly thought was incompetent. Don't forget that this company was once side by side (or almost) slugging it out with the young CSCO .... and eventually exited all of those markets with its tail pinned securely between its legs. Its stock went UP when its CEO left the company recently.

The only thing of value 3COM really had was PALM, and even then there were times shortly after the IPO where it sold at a discount to the value of its PALM shares.

MRVC is totally different. It has no real track record. More importantly, Luminent is but one of many hoped-for IPO's. In that respect it is more akin to the CMGI of two years ago, or the ICGE of a year ago (or SFE). Those companies have fallen on hard times of late because the sectors in which they incubate are out of favor and maybe never should have been in favor. MRVC, though, is in a sector which might avoid that fate ..... its progeny sell real products which are greatly in need, hard to produce, and if superior positions in the market can be developed, capable of producing huge margins if managed properly.

Not all of those things may come to pass, but they are enough reason not to head for the hills simply because the Luminent IPO has come and gone. And don't forget that the next IPO is waiting in the wings, the SEC filing process already underway.

Should be interesting to watch.

well even though I wasn't high on coms, if you add up the numbers, the coms holders came out pretty well overall. 1.6 shares of palm equals about $90 plus the $19 for coms remainder gives a price of $109 compared to 30-40 range prior to spinoff.knc
