Eric, There is much confusion over: What the heck is a 3G network? Lots of confusion over what is 3G, i.e. does 1x at 150kbs qualify?, but the interesting question is what qualifies as a network? It depends on how one sees things. I would bet that the Koreans have much larger deployments of 1x at 150 kbs, followed by 1xev at 300kbs plus HDR at megabit speeds, than NTT with wcdma (10 users?) in Japan in 2001. The question will be whether NTT's WCMA system, if launched, actually qualifies as a network. Maybe we should set up some sort of criteria: Netowrk is at least 1M users? 3G is 150kbs, 300kbs, etc.? I'm sure the carriers will all make definitions to suit their needs, but it would be interesting to come up with our own standards. Suggestions? Caxton

"And we'll see who has the first 3g network.." ---------- NTT's May 2001 buildout is expected to have speeds approaching 64KBS. Hardly 3G. Using an IMT-2000 approved standard in the designated spectrum does not make NTT's proposed system 3G. Blatently false advertising by NTT - somehow more palatable and acceptable to the standards purists than 1x's claim, even if 1x does meet performance specifications. Rather amusing. How many equipment and software generations - how many years will be required for NTT to achieve 3G performance specifications and provide legitimate 3G services? 2002? 2003? Rather hard to say. ben
