It depends on how one sees things. >> There is no confusion outside of North America or 3GPP2 about any of the above. It most certainly does not depend upon how you, I, Dr. Jacobs or Perry La Forge see things. It depends on IMT-2000 criteria and 3G spectrum specifically set aside for auction (typically at 2GHz). << I would bet that the Koreans have much larger deployments of 1x at 150 kbs, followed by 1xev at 300kbs plus HDR at megabit speeds, than NTT with wcdma (10 users?) in Japan in 2001. The question will be whether NTT's WCMA system, if launched, actually qualifies as a network. >> IS-95C using MSM5000 is not 3G. It isn't even IS-2000 compliant. HDR is VAPORWARE. No standard and confusion about how to get there. << Maybe we should set up some sort of criteria: Network is at least 1M users? 3G is 150kbs, 300kbs, etc.? >> IMT-2000 standards are set. We don't set the criteria. All 3 Korean carriers are reacting to the criteria. So they insist on 5 MHZ carrier for 2GHz spectrum. We don't provide that solution. Qualcomm says there is a better solution. korean carriers don't buy it. Why is everybody puzzled about why they are choosing WCDMA? They don't buy the unstandardized, non CDMA (HDR), 1.25 GHz solution. Simple. Definition of a commercial network? If licensed, attracting subscribers, and operational, they are a network. First PCS network in the US was Sprint Spectrum. They launched their network commercially 3rd week of November 1995, in Baltimore Washington. End of first week they had 30,000 subscribers. Were the a commercial network? Absolutely. PrimeCo launched the first CDMA network in the US in October 1996. It took them 20 months to get to 1 million subs. Were they a commercial network in October 1996? Of course they were. If you determine a network at 1MM subs, there are only 11 CDMA networks in the world. Catch you next week.
