China is one thing, but anyone who fears North Korea or Pakistan's missile capability vs. the US is like a child scared of the boogey-man.

China now has the ability to cause great damage to the US.
North Korea can threaten South Korea and Japan. In other decade or less it will be able to threaten the US. Takeing rational steps to deal with potential nuclear threats is not like being scared of the boogey-man.

And anyone who thinks this won't won't 400 billion (current list price 200 billion) doesn't remember the huge cost over-runs of unproven dis-functional weapons systems of the past.

The proposed missile defences will not cost $400bil or even $200bil to deploy. If you count expanding them and maintaing them over many decades then they will cost more then $400bil, but the $400bil or even a couple a trillion over 25 years is not that big of burden considering the potential threat.

Hardly fiscally "conservative". The Democrats have
become the fiscally conservative party now. Bush has no plan for paying down the debt at all. He's rather waste hundreds of billions defending us against non-existent threads.

1 - Bush does propose paying down some of the government debt.

2 - The Democrats are hardly fiscally conservative. Al Gore's new spending plans will cost a lot more then missle defence.
