Now the GWB record is being looked into (finally). That could influence things mightily. There is no denying that GW is a smooth talker, good-looking in a certain way and has a lot of teflon on him. These are all important attributes for a politician to have. As for "honesty" he is lacking in that department if you study his record. And that message will get out. The most honest president we've ever had was Carter and he was defeated handily. Therefore, thoug it should be a plus it's not. Unfortunately too much is about image now. In any case Gore has a pretty strong image himself and is clearly more passionate about issues which people care about. He makes mistakes but so does Bush. And people who think Bush's tax-cut is a great thing are ignoring two important facts, one is that it's all borrowed money, the secodn is that if the ecoinomy slows the tax cut will never materialize, or if it does, then we go further into debt and interest rates and inflation rise. Stagflation possibly. Expect the Gore camp to hone in on Bush's record and real values now and for the race to tighten again. If Gore can hold leads in PA, IOWA, WISC, MINN, NJ, NH, TENN, ORE and WASH he wins by four electoral votes. Bush has given up on ILL. I'm even giving Bush Michigan, Missouri, Florida, Arkansas, New Mexico, none of which he has a clear lead in now. In other words, this is going to be a battle royale. And if Bush pulls it off it will be a matter of image over substance. Personally I believe that would be a tragedy. But of course Republicans disagree. There is also the possibility that Bush could take the lead in votes and still lose. And also that the election could be a tie if Gore loses New Hampshire, then 270 each. Going forward there are three factors which should worry Bush supporters. Buchanon has lots of money to spend. Nader vote will probably almost all go to Gore in the end. And Gore has more cash than Bush left. Also the Texas record will become the focus and a big-big issue. You saw Bush try to deflect the facts on Texas during the last debate. He won't be able to duck them once the media swarms into his state looking for facts. Everyone knows Gore's history. Bush has tried to keep much his past a secret. His military avoidance, coke and alcohol abuse are other issues which will come out if it starts getting nasty. So far they haven't been used. They are the equivalent of the Gennifer Flowers tactic. A very real negative campaigning tool if needed. This kind of thing came out on Quayle and discredited him. Bush is very similar to Quayle in many ways. Back in the 80's all the rich kids did coke. But not Gore. He puffed in the 60's but then got down to business and hard work. The only skeleton is his closet is the Buddhist temple thing which has already been used up. The GOP has no negative campaigning ammunition left. But Gore has it all and hasn't used it yet.
