JC -as I said, execution has yet to be determined. But the "Plan" looks right to me. MS surely has more expertise on the client side than on the server side - so a client play makes sense for them, it's in their "DNA".

I also understand what you are saying about servers. While MSFT would clearly like to get more server business, that area (at least on the application space) is currently dominated by Unix, with Solaris at the forefront.

What I was addressing here was Frederick's assertion that MSFT is somehow against individual empowerment when that is where they have always made their money, and where they claim to be aiming now.

BTW I think .NET is a lot more than a "hail Mary". I have looked at their development framework and it has lots of interesting potential. All of this is still just a framework - but my sense is that MSFT has made huge strides in their thinking in the last year and that this initiative has a good shot at re-enabling a long term client franchise.

As far as "would I let MSFT do my authentication" - depends on whether it is more convenient to use than the current multiple logins and passwords. I am not really concerned that someone might get access to my real-time streaming quotes... for banking and other uses, I would always demand 128 bit encrypted secure web sites and would take the time to log on, in that case.
