I don't think the monolithic box architecture will hold its prominence over time. The PC will be around for at least another decade, but the growth with be in other areas, such as mobile devices. The PC may evolve to be more of the central "synchronization station". Besides that, the emphasis is shifting from electronics being PC centric to being information centric with compute power and storage "somewhere out there". Just as the PC itself made radical sense compared to big blue mainframes computers, distributed information and access based on function makes sense today. It makes sense going forward because bandwidth is the new dimension for unfolding of Moore's law. A monstrously centralized PC architecture makes no more sense than a monstrously centralized mainframe computer sitting in the middle of tethered users. In the end, the most functional, lowest cost, and easiest to capitalize on wired and wireless bandwidth will be the direction architectures evolve. And just like in 1978, new forms of interface and computing won't displace the PC anymore than the PC displaced mainframes. But, growth of the PC (the news form) vastly outstripped the mainframe. PC sales will probably continue to grow at 5%-12% over the next decade but that is slow compared to past rates.

The purpose of my discussion wasn't to say that I agreed with selling of AMD stock or that business is going to slow anytime soon. But to point out concerns that are keeping the stock from moving up on the recent good earnings news.
