The Pheonix,

re:-

Monty, I changed my name for no particular reason. I suppose you believe in consipiracy theory as well? Do you have a bunker in the backyard in case the fed's come to your house to take your guns?

Yep I have a bunker. Somewhere Tony Blair will never get my guns. It's called America.

Seriously though, my house is about 350 ft above mean sea level (at the moment) and the house I live has a full basement. My next door neighbour has a WW11 air raid shelter in his basement packed with dried food stuff etc. It's walls are about a foot thick and has a substantial reinforced concrete roof. Won't be any good if the ruskies throw over a big one though -g-

My street only had one house bombed during WW2. That was the house of my other neighbour. I live in #15 if you get the picture. LOL

pearly.

Flood families face health and power supply risks
11:29am Sunday, 15th October 2000

Hundreds of families hit by floods are facing the new threat of sewage pollution, as well as damage to gas and electricity supplies.

As the floodwater continues to recede and the most severe flood warnings on some rivers are finally downgraded, urgent health and safety advice is being issued to families preparing to return to their deluged properties across the south-east of England.

Spillages from oil tanks and contamination from sewers are being treated by the Environment Agency's pollution experts as a matter of priority. Their efforts have been hampered by the failure of the main Lewes to Newhaven pumping station, put out of action by the flooding.

A Kent Police spokesman said: "We are urging homeowners to be extra vigilant when returning to their properties. Gas and electricity companies are warning that supplies may be damaged and are asking customers to check before switching on appliances."

The Environment Agency is warning of a possible health risk posed by sewage systems that may not be working properly in the wake of floods. A spokesman said: "Sewer systems have become surcharged by floodwaters and contamination remains an issue."

Clean-up operations are now under way in Lewes, East Sussex, where the Ouse burst its banks and tore through homes and businesses. Many low-lying areas of the historic town are still under water, but fire crews and the Environment Agency have started pumping water from the buildings most affected as many residents remain in temporary accommodation.

Severe flood warnings on the River Uck, which burst its banks and devastated shops in Uckfield on Thursday; the River Ouse at Lewes; and the River Cuckmere at Hellingly have been downgraded to flood warnings, with the agency warning that any more rain may reverse the move.

In Kent, residents of Maidstone escaped catastrophic floods which were feared when high tide pushed the River Medway to its highest level at 3am on Saturday and again at 3pm. Only riverside commercial properties in the Lock Meadow district were flooded.

But in the downstream villages of Yalding, Wateringbury, East Farleigh, Laddingford and East Peckham, the Medway spilled over on to the flood plain and damaged hundreds of homes.
