PMC-Sierra Soars on Strong Chip Demand
October 13, 2000

NEW YORK -(Dow Jones)- Despite certain supply shortages, Canadian chip maker PMC-Sierra Inc. posted third-quarter results above analysts' estimates because of strong demand for its high-speed telecommunications products.

PMC-Sierra (PMCS) which supplies such telecommunications-equipment companies as Lucent Technologies Inc., Nortel Networks Corp. and Cisco Systems Inc., said its net loss for the third quarter came to $29.7 million, or 18 cents a share, compared with net income of $15.8 million, or 18 cents a share, in the year-earlier period. Revenue more than doubled to $198.1 million from $82.5 million a year earlier.

Excluding expenses related to acquisitions and stock-based compensation as well as investment gains, the company said it would have posted earnings of $56 million, or 31 cents a share. The mean estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call/Thomson Financial was for earnings from operations of 26 cents a share.

"PMC-Sierra experienced significant growth in the third quarter despite a tight wafer supply situation. As the supply situation loosens we hope to help our customers reduce their mounting backlogs. The broadband bandwidth buildout is in full swing and should continue for several years as new technologies and web-centric applications come on-line," said chairman and chief executive officer Bob Bailey.
