Not a big issue but it is a question reporters do ask of Bush. So far he's just evaded the question as if it's beneath him. As the campaign gets closer and the election nearer the questions are going to get tougher for Bush. He's already starting to avoid reporters. Won't let them near him anymore. Doesn't want to be asked tough questions. He's ahead for now. So close, so much at stake. Doesn't want to blow it by making a gaffe or have to lie or evade too much more. But the press doesn't like that treatment. And they can hurt you if they want to at least in subtle ways. If Bush is seen as avoiding them and trying to play it safe look out. The press will turn against him. Don't be surprised if Bush's old coke dealer or bar-tenders comes forward. It happened to Quayle. It can happen to him. Gloves are coming off. The GOP are the kings of dirty tricks but the Dems can deal dirt too. James Carville might make a re-appearance. He knows how to win a political street-fight. The charges and counter-charges will get sharper and more personal. Everyone's been trying to be polite so far (give or a take a "RATS" ad or so). But now it's the home stretch. No more Mr. nice guys. Gore found out he blew it by being too nice during the last debate. He has already changed tactics. Gore is well-known as one of the toughest campaigners out there. No wimp at all. he can roar like a lion. Bush is digging in knowing the offensive is coming. And he's lobbing as many grenades back as he can at the same time to try and keep the attackers off-balance. This is going to be the battle royale in the last few weeks. Nothing will be off-limits. Every inch of Texas will be scoured. Bush will deflect and counter-charge and avoid and deny as much as he can but some of it will stick. If Gore is behind then he has nothing to lose. Gore campaign also has a lot more real ammunition they haven't used yet and Bush knows it. Gore can win on his record but Bush can't. Gore has the best issues. Bush knows it. Bush will try to only appear at crafted photo ops and appear smiling and presidential. But his opponents will drag him down into a mud-rassle. The Gore campaign will never bring cocaine use, insider trading and alcoholism up themselves but others will. And if Gore ever did anything unethical in his life that will come up too. Trouble for the Bush camp is every mis-doing by Gore has already been used and over-used, and a lot of it exposed as BS. And in this game you can't use the same piece of ammo twice. Especially after it's exploded in your own face. The tone of this thread is a good indication of how things are going to be. Starting this weekend it's going to get nasty. I don't know how it's going to end but it's going to be very close nomatter what. Bush has a slim lead. Gore has more ammo, money plus maybe some help from Buchanon and Nader voters. Clinton has some real power he can use. He could bomb Saddam or at least he could help break the deadlock in Arkansas. Arkansas alone may be enough to win it for Gore. That's how close it is. Bush is bringing out the Republican governors and wives to help. Gore can enlist movie stars, rock stars, unions, teachers, minority leaders. All the influential voices which have not been seen yet will appear and talk to their constinuents. Money will flow in like a torrent. Bush has the oil business, drug companies, tobacco and HMO's. Gore has the jews, lawyers, unions and Hollywood. I still believe this is Gore's election to lose. He's behind in the polls a little but still tied or better in electoral votes (by my tally). His plan is better for women, youth voters, elderly and minorities. Bush's plan is better for the rich and conservative. Gore's natural supporters are a bigger group. But it's up to him now to get them up in arms and motivated. It's like a football game with Bush ahead by six points starting the fourth quarter. Should be play defence or continue offence? He knows Gore will be all offence, even throwing some long bombs to win it all. Could come down to the last play of the game. Is this an election or what? And is Bush the new Reagan of the new Dewey? Gore had sure as hell be the new Truman or he's going to suffer a heartbreaking loss. Should be the closest presidential election we've ever seen.
