Nasdaq Acknowledges Delays in `SelectNet' Messaging System

Washington, Oct. 16 (Bloomberg) -- The Nasdaq Stock Market
said its main communications network, SelectNet, hit a technical snag, delaying the transmission of price quotes and trades.

The nation's No. 2 stock market was alerted to the delays at
11:10 a.m. New York time by one of its approximately 550 broker-dealer firms. SelectNet was fixed by 11:28 a.m., according to spokesman Scott Peterson.

``After investigation, we found out that it was a runaway
processor,'' Peterson said. ``We reset that processor, and it began
immediately working off the queue that had been developed.''

As trading soared this year, Nasdaq came under fire for such
delays. Automated trading networks like Island ECN, part of Datek Online Holdings, said delays forced them to cover for trades that fell through. Bloomberg News is a unit of Bloomberg LP, which owns the Bloomberg Tradebook LLC trading network.

More than 2.3 billion shares traded in Nasdaq on Wednesday,
the market's fourth-busiest day. Trading peaked on April 4, when 2.9 billion shares changed hands.
