Portrait of America seems legit but it has NEVER shown Gore ahead by more than one point ever. Not even when other polls showed him as much as 1 points ahead (which I never believed). Impossible to know why but they say they use automated telephone polling. I know I'd hang on up whatever automated service might call me.

The Zogby article says those most likely to answer surveys are Republican or Jewish. I guess the rest of us hang up.

Oops, my man. Just found out Portrait Of American is run by a conservative group and is discredited. No wonder I've never heard of them. And no wonder all their numbers are skewed toward Bush and never showed Gore in a lead, ever.

"This poll is by Scott Rasmussen, republican from North Carolina. This obscure agency "produces" 6-7 polls a day and they are promoted mostly on conservative web sites.
They use "resampled" models contradicting any known sampling techniques and the models show conservatives outnumbering moderates and liberals combined.

A comment from National Journal, Oct 12:

...
Unscientific Polls: This cycle, more than any other, has seen a proliferation of automated polls. Some of these polls are proving fairly accurate, but none is seen as an accepted way to conduct scientific polling. The most prominent of these automated pollsters is Rasmussen Research. His polling is cited quite a bit by some in the conservative press, as he's consistently had Bush up in his tracking poll. We have not reported on the poll because every political pollster (Republican and Democrat alike) as well as every media pollster, believes Rasmussen's methodology is not scientific. That said, we are keeping tabs on the Rasmussen numbers; there could be a time when Rasmussen can prove its method is as scientific and reliable as the traditional, more proven, methods.
