The National Post reports in its Saturday, Oct. 14, edition that Barrick Gold chairman, Peter Munk, has been subpoenaed by the defence to testify at the trial of John Felderhof, the former vice-chairman of Bre-X Minerals. The National Post's Sandra Rubin writes that it is not clear what role Mr. Munk might play in testifying in Mr. Felderhof's defence. Barrick had vied to win a piece of Bre-X's Indonesian gold strike off and on since early 1994. In 1996 Barrick cut a deal with a firm owned by Indonesian President Suharto's daughter. A rumour suggests that Mr. Felderhof's lawyer may put Mr. Munk on the stand in an attempt to demonstrate that the Suharto government had gone behind Bre-X's back and struck a deal with Barrick -- leaving Mr. Felderhof in the dark when he sold his shares. A Barrick spokesperson says Mr. Munk has no idea what testimony he could be asked to provide. The trial begins Monday and is expected to last until Christmas.
