The violence -- the worst in four days -- cast a pall over American and U.N. efforts to negotiate a truce at a Mideast summit in Egypt attended by Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak and Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.

In several areas, Palestinian militiamen -- apparently hoping to sabotage international mediation efforts (I think by Arafat secret orders) -- opened fire on Israeli positions Monday.

In the West Bank town of Ramallah, about 50 armed
Palestinians joined the funeral procession of a 30-year-old
Palestinian man who died of injuries sustained in clashes
with Israeli troops last week. The militiamen fired in the air
at Ramallah's Manara Square where they read a statement
denouncing Arafat's involvement in the summit. ``We will
defend our people with whatever we have in our hands,'' it
said.

Later, protesters marched toward an Israeli checkpoint north
of the city, where militiamen opened fire on Israeli troops,
drawing return fire.
