Andy--No oil company comes close to a 90% market share, as MSFT has in both PC operating systems and word processing. Exxon and Mobil combined might have a 20% to 30% market share. However much you may dislike Big Oil, the market share numbers back up the DOJ in both approving oil mergers and chasing after the MSFT monopoly. JMO

I agree. Let's get loud about it. Write your congressman/woman or senator. If you don't, they just take the oil money and it slides by all greasy past the FTC and DoJ. --- Personally. I don't think it'll be allowed. I want to say, unless Bush is elected, but the fact is Gore is likely just as beholding to big oil. I heard that he has a large Occidental Petroleum position (could be wrong, but I wouldn't be surprised). --- The DoJ is apparently going to disallow or restrict the Time-Warner/AOL merger. That's probably on the stregth of AT&T's lobby. --- You're right though, it'd be *ludicrous for Standard Oil to re-form (basically) while the Sherman act is in process. I don't know. Maybe the timimg is more than coincidental. In any case, a Chev/Texaco merger is bad news to you and me. -JCJ
